INTERVIEW #1: THE HOLLOWCANE

For those who got familiar with the one and only local indie-rock band “The Hollowcane”, you’d probably know that June is actually their month. They officially launched their band this month last year with five fixed personnel: Ega MP (lead vocal and guitar), Dicky (drum), Mario (guitarist and vocal), Ilham (Bass player), and Anjar (DJ, keyboard). Meanwhile, their first album was officially launched in December 2019.

“We are all skaters. I’m personally grown up as a skater. That’s perhaps why The Hollowcane is well-known in the skate community (especially in Bandung). Our very first audiences are the skaters in our circle,”Ega explained to us.

The name “Hollowcane” itself is adapted from the word ‘hollow cane’ (meaning: walking stick). It seems familiar to Ega (the founder) as many injured skaters often use the hollow cane to help them walk. Another way to explain it, The Hollowcane might come across your life once or twice to help you slowly reflect your mind and help you walk and be firm again before you run again to pursue the future in this life.

“Our genre is indie-rock and all I could say is we’re pretty much inspired by the soundtracks we heard from the early 2000’s skateboard video-part; the kind of song that will pump your adrenaline rush when you listen to it,”said Ega.

No wonder that their songs are something worth turning on when you drive through the highway with car windows open, feeling the night breeze, and just vibing. This is why we believe that skaters have to put their songs on the playlist; not because you want it, but because you need it!

In this article, we got a very special part to write down and share with you guys the lyrics of their latest song “Everything Needs Sorrow” – and we have our writer got the chance to interpret the meaning of the lyrics from her perspective too!

Everything Needs Sorrow

By: The Hollowcane

What , what’s left behind me

soon it will be gone, sooner it will go

Tell , tell me the hard way

to take yourself down, to make yourself down 2x

meaning: the songwriter tells us the story about his past. The stories from the past (the dark, hard-times, regrets, mistakes, and other disappointments) will soon turn to be only memories. He’s asking his past-self on how to keep him there while he’s moving forward in his life.

You turn it down , i will make it calm

I will Find my way, to see another place

everything needs sorrow , before you’re happy in the end

meaning: This is perhaps the conversation of the songwriter with his past-self. He is assuring himself that he will eventually find a better place where he belongs, knowing that it takes hard times prior to a glorious day (sorrows before the happy ending)

Walk, walked through the highway

sooner it will pass, sooner it will pass

Well, don’t tell me the hard way

To make someone down , make someone down

meaning: It may explain how the songwriter visualizes how he’s been through in this life and got through all the paths. He’s telling himself not to expect too much in the journey, just to go with it.

When You come around , and i will say its done

I don’t need a changes , i already found the place

But everything needs sorrow , before you’re happy in the end 2x

meaning: again, he’s talking to himself and having a deep conversation about life in his own mind; speaking that he doesn’t need any other expectations or the idealism of changes he dreamt of before. He already found the joy of life, the grateful feeling from realizing that it takes sorrow before we actually realize the true definition of happiness itself. This is also the personal message from Ega, “It’s the conversation of me, myself, and Allah. We have to sacrifice many things in this world for the peaceful after-life”

(song lyrics interpreted by Kei, with the approval from The Hollowcane)

What’s pretty unique from their songs – if you haven’t realized it yet – that their songs have various ways to be interpreted, it’s all up to each listener. Yes they talk about love and compassion in the big picture, but it’s not only defined for the love-interest or romance. It can be defined about our love & compassion for anything.

“We have many artists inspiring us. But things around us, the situation, real life stories are those who matter most for our inspiration,”which explained why we are so relate to their songs.
